my generation (I am 33) .

The only Westerns we were allowed to see

were produced by East German studio DEFA with only one star – the

Yugoslav hunk Goiko Mititch. And mostly only one set – the greedy

prospectors arrive to pick the Indian land and the feathered patriots

put on the warpaint, flex their muscles – they all were very athletic,
unlike the whites who were depicted as the degenerates in every sense
- and breeze to sweep the terrain smart of that capitalist scum.

But
we were grateful even for that substitute, tired of seeing the other
Red Against White flicks – the films about the Russian Civil War
heroes killing the White Guards by hundreds for the sake of Mother
Russia’s communist future.

And then “Zoloto Makkeni” was
imported. Why? The message was determined – “Contemplate at these gold-crazed
American bastards! Preachers, journalists, merchants,
bandidos, soldiers, adventurers – all of them are ready to sell their
Momma’s for a speck of golden dust! And this time they testify
themselves, not our East German friends.” -

But who cared about
all that? The authentic American Western! With the exact Indians
instead of East German Olympic Team painted in gouache! The film’s
mildly idiotic background commentaries did not effect us flinch – they
fit into the didactic tradition we were passe to.

And the opening
song! It was translated in Russian and sung in the film by the
Russia’s much-adored sweet-voiced drunk Valeri Obodzinskij. In the
restaurants, at a campfires, in a streets the young males were singing
- Vnov, vnov zoloto manit nas! – The gold lures us again and again! -

I was 8-9 year musty at that time. Seen the film weekly. The boys in
the playground asked in a whisper: – Do they point to something there?
You know…- And I told them: – Oh yeah! The Indian girl…–
They really do! Wow!- Well, speaking about childhood traumas…Once I
took my mother along and seeing the bathing scene she suspected what
was coming and obscured my thought with her hand….But seriously, the
remastering crew did a splendid job. The sights, the sounds – perfect!
These were the times they were quiet glad to shoot in mostly natural-
maybe slightly enhanced – colors, without these annoying tints and
shades of today, when they seem to dip the freshly shot rolls of films
in a can of blue paint.

I do not know how I would gaze the film today
without that cinematic abstinence/communist background. Who can yell?

But I am so fond of it that even being between the jobs – a period
where every dollar counts – I HAD to bewitch the disc. And I do not
regret..

In the past I’ve seen this movie only in 1.33:1 pan and scan. From its opening titles, I knew it was a Elegant Panavision film, which means to me it was released in 70mm widescreen. The case clearly states that Side A is 2.35:1 and that Side B is 1.33:1 pan and scan, and I bought it hoping finally to gawk it in all its glory. I’ve always had a “thing” for the Arizona and southern Utah canyon lands.

Except for the opening credits and ruin titles, there is no widescreen version on this disc. In fact, contrary to the advertising it’s a one-sided disc. I deem this product misrepresentation and a immense disappointment. With virtually the entire film presented in close-ups, every flawed and cheesy process shot appears as if under a microscope. You can gape every awful matte painting, every poorly blended green mask (or did they spend a blue conceal? ), every transition from full-sized live to runt. Worst of all, most of the stout southwestern scenery is somewhere offscreen beyond the edges of my television.

I’d smooth really like to examine this film in widescreen. Any hope?

For some weird reason the very splendid Australian/British film LIKE MINDS underwent a name change and hit the US market as MURDEROUS INTENT. The fresh title is so worthy more apropos of the story: the alternate title tends to gain the audience pass over ‘just another death film’ category that prevents this satisfactory cramped film from arresting to a wide audience. Writer/Director Gregory J. Reed and his talented cast and production staff deserve better as this is a beautiful psychological drama well worth seeing.

The setting is an all boys’ prep school and among the students is Alex (a very ravishing young Eddie Redmayne) who happens to be the son of the headmaster (Patrick Malahide) and is a incandescent scholar – if somewhat of a troublemaker at the same time. Into this setting arrives a current student Nigel (an equally glorious young Tom Sturridge) who is a darkly aloof, malevolent, smart lad preoccupied with history and necrophilia. The two boys are placed together as roommates, considerable to Alex’s objections, and gradually secrets are unraveled that reveal how the two boys become, via gestalt, a sum of rank greater than its parts. Alex is frightened and yet fascinated with the ritual-influenced deaths that open to occur and when Nigel himself is murdered, Alex is the blamed.

Enter the police: McKenzie (Richard Roxburgh) arrests and charges Alex with execute, but requires substantiation from a forensic psychologist Sally (the always obliging Toni Collette) . Sally interviews Alex, observes his behavior and manages to regain inside his mind, learn about the historical data that has directed the immoral from her astute questioning sessions with Alex, and begins to follow her contain intuition about the case. There are twists and turns, flashbacks to incidents, investigation details, and discoveries bordering on the occult that glide this dusky tale like a helix of anxiety. The ending will surprise the viewer.

The script is favorable, the acting is top notch, the production manufacture is accomplished and the musical win by Carlo Giacco is simply intellectual. This is a attractive art film, graced by the quality of superb acting position by Collette, and is a tense drama that will support an audience thinking and enthusiastic to the final credits. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, August 07

Michael T. Klare makes tiresome how the past 60 years of American foreign policy in the Middle East is linked to Middle Eastern oil. The American military longed for permanent bases in the Middle East that were larger and less secretive than the ones outmoded in Israel. The first Gulf War permitted the “temporary” basing of American forces in Saudi Arabia, which proved to be very animated to Islamic radicals and lit the fuse for their attacks on the American diplomatic and military presence in the Gulf states, Africa and finally attacks on US financial and military headquarters in Modern York City and Washington, D.C. The second Gulf War was an attempt to push aside an unlikable Iraqi leader to design plot for a number of permanent US military bases in Iraq that would guarantee continued US access to Iraqi and Middle Eastern oil.

Michael T. Klare is correct to focus on the political relationships that have shaped American access to vital resources that lie outside our borders. Resources that today are in decline and will be approach increasingly scarce and more primary to control. The American military, despite six years of war in Iraq, is prepared to militarily attack any country that dares to stand in the plot of American access to these resources. And as long as the US has the energy and the war machine and political inclination to do so there will be future resource wars in the coming decades. Gape out when the modern US economic stimulus program fails to invent acceptable results. War will be the acknowledge. It always is.

The power elite of this country is very skilled at convincing big enough segments of our population to go along with horrifying wars of aggression Body of War – The Accurate Myth of an Anti-War Hero. One technique of persuasion that Petagon “perception managers” consume is diversion; for example, getting the public to discuss Saddam Hussein instead of debating the expend of force to control oil supplies in the interests of transnational corporations (not the “national interest”) . The managers of our plutocracy know how unpopular a cause increasing Exxon and Lockheed’s profits is; so instead the corporate noise machine focuses the discussion on Saddam Hussein’s cruelty (Hussein is one of many dictators Western “civilization” has supported, and the Iraqi people are one of many populations Western “civilization” has brutalized) and whether he should be in power. That’s a framing of the War on Iraq that the war profiteers will derive.

U.S. citizens need to defend themselves against these rhetorical manipulations, and the documentaries of the Media Education Foundation are invaluable tools to resist the corporate colonization of our minds.

MEF’s production of “Blood and Oil,” based on the work of author Michael Klare Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America’s Growing Dependency on Imported Petroleum, is the sort of insightful analysis that exposes the less-than-noble agenda that lies at the root of U.S. spot fright in the Middle East, and beyond. The Middle East is the focus of “Blood and Oil,” but similar resource warfare is taking site throughout the Global South The Unusual Resource Wars: Native and Environmental Struggles Against Multinational Corporations. Even in the wealthier and more Anglo parts of the globe, the tyranny of the fossil fuel industry is wreaking havoc, as in the case of King Coal which is literally blowing apart mountains and cultures in West Virginia Lost Mountain.

Thanks to independent films like “Blood and Oil,” there is growing awareness and more community organizing taking dwelling The Tyranny of Oil: The World’s Most Noteworthy Industry–and What We Must Do to Cessation It. I was fortunate to gawk this film on “Link TV,” and am tickled that it’s available on Amazon. The Media Education Foundation needs to gather all their DVDs on Amazon.

I’m going to suggest to MEF that they originate providing foreign language subtitles to their DVDs, since the scope of the corporate matrix’s propaganda is transnational The Global Media: The Missionaries of Global Capitalism (Media Studies) . The progressive resistance and solidarity needs to be global as well Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Social Movement in History Is Restoring Grace, Justice, and Beauty to the World.

Customer Reviews:

Great system, with a couple exceptions4
I own a new 40″ Sony Bravia LCD that I hooked this system up to. I was very impressed with its sound and its wide range of features for the price! However, there were a couple areas that I feel need to be addressed.

PROS:
- Excellent sound, especially the Movie DCS mode which adds a ton of depth to any movie
- Easy setup
- Excellent integration with a Sony TV. I can fully control my LCD from the receiver remote after hooking up the HDMI cables.
- Full HDMI switching makes initial connection and switching between sources a snap. I can switch between cable and my PS3 with 1 button.
- Wide range of format handling, including Linear PCM.
- Wide range of sound modes.
- No color distortion issues when switching between HDMI sources. This seemed to be a problem in older models.

CONS:
- I found the bass to be a little lacking due to the fact that the subwoofer is passive. I swapped the included one out with this: Yamaha YST-SW216BL Advanced YST II Front-Firing Active Subwoofer and it brought the sound to a whole new level!
- Uses proprietary speaker wire connections. Sony makes it very hard to swap the subwoofer like I described previously because the receiver uses proprietary plugs for the speakers instead of generic speaker wire attachments. The system comes with 4 thin speaker wires with plugs to the receiver on one end, and bare wire on the other to hook up to the satellite speakers. However, the subwoofer’s is HARD WIRED, so it can’t be detached at all. What’s worse is that Sony only sells their speaker wires in packs of 5, for a whopping $55.
To use my new subwoofer, I simply found an aftermarket plug with a small length of wire on eBay, spliced it with some standard 18 gauge wire of my own and hooked it up to my new sub. Voila, it worked like a charm.

OVERALL:
Out of the box, the system is a solid 4/5. With a powered subwoofer and a little bit of handiwork to get around Sony’s greed, it can be improved to 5/5.

Just about perfect except for HDMI and center speaker issues4
As someone who was in the process of purchasing my first blu-ray player I was looking to upgrade my older Sony surround sound system as well. I was looking for a couple of things in a new system: One, that it had plenty of HDMI inputs and two, that it had a high-quality sound for the price point.

As for the most important item, the sound, this is a great system. People have said it is like listening to a $500-1000 system. I don’t know if it sounds as good as a $1000 system, but I would say it does sound wonderful like a $500-700 system so for the price it can’t be beat. The highs sound very clear and crisp and the bass is deep with depth without losing too much ‘punch’ or getting too ‘muddy’. The only minor issue I have with sound is that when dialogue gets loud the center speaker (on rare occasions) ‘flinches’ and has the slightest sound like feedback. It could be the case itself vibrating as I have it sitting against the T.V. base/stand so this could be the problem as well.

Out of the box the system takes a little time to set up (as does any surround system with the speakers, etc). This system looks sleek and is identical to the companion blu ray player I purchased to go with it; they have a matching black color, are matching in size and are similar in faceplate size and in overall sleek design. The receiver for this unit is about half the height and depth as my old Sony one, leaving me more space to add other components into my rack.

The speaker wires are thin and the speakers each have proprietary connections going into the receiver but it sounds so good I don’t feel any need to replace the wires so this is a moot point for me.

Once the system is arranged and the speakers all connected there is a little microphone you can plug into the back of the unit, place it in what would be the ideal listening spot in the room and using the remote you can access a little sequence of sound tests in the menu to have the unit self-calibrate itself. This is a nice feature to use to get started but I found tweaking was needed to get the best possible sound…the bass was way too loud using the self-calibration. However, in all other aspects as far as distance of the individual speakers and the volume level of each speaker, the self-calibration did very well and was pretty accurate in these areas.

The unit’s set-up and menu is all accessed by remote and uses kind of a branching mode in which to reach all of the individual settings. You have to look at the little screen on the receiver and this can be tedious but is easier once you are familiar with how to access the various areas of the menu. An on-screen menu would have been a great addition for this unit (but of course would also have raised the cost).

The HDMI connections for me were great. I have a blu ray player, a cable/satellite tuner and a 5-disc DVD upconverter/CD player all using HDMI cables for optimal performance…being able to run all 3 of those into the receiver and then running just one HDMI cable from the receiver to the HDTV cut back on the spaghetti of cables and gave me the best signal performance possible from all of my components. When you select the input on the receiver (blu ray player, cable, etc) that is what the receiver will play as far as audio and is the signal that will be sent to the HDTV as well.

However, there are two issues with this HDMI set up. First, you will not be able to use more than one component at a time. For instance, you can not listen to a CD while at the same time watch video from your cable or satellite because you will not be able to choose more than one input to play at a time UNLESS you connect them directly to each other instead of running them all through the receiver. Then you could play a CD through the receiver and play video from the cable or satellite box directly to the TV (bypassing the video around the receiver).

The second problem is that the audio and video does not always output correctly with the selection of the input on the receiver. For example, I have noticed that on occasion I may select the cable/satellite on the receiver and the audio will be there but I will not get a picture on the HDTV even though the TV is tuned to the right setting. If I turn the input on and off on the receiver or turn the TV itself on and off suddenly the picure miraculously comes on. Other times I will play a blu ray disc and I can get the picture on the TV but the audio will not be recognized or played back by the receiver (even though the picture and sound are going through the same HDMI cable) and I will have to either turn the receiver on and off or the blu ray player on and off to get the audio going. I can’t figure out any particular pattern this follows but it does happen frequently…other times it works correctly with no problems. Perhaps this would not happen if all of my equipment was Sony and the components all ‘talked’ to each other better (my HDTV is not a Sony brand). I’m still trying to figure this out as it is annoying. I am always eventually able to get everything working together-it just might take a couple of extra buttons to get there.

One other very important piece of info is that this unit will accept a linear PCM channel for audio. This means you can playback the True HD Dolby and HD DTS Master lossless sountracks on blu ray discs AS LONG AS the blu ray player you are using has the processing for those formats built into it. The companion Sony player (the S360) as well as many newer ones do have the HD soundtrack processing in them.

In the end the performance and sound far outweigh the rare issue with the center speaker and the quirky HDMI input/output problems. If the price of the system was in the $500-600 range I would have to move it to just 3 stars. But the price is great for the quality of sound this unit produces resulting in my 4-star review.

Great sound, good price and easy set up.5
When I recently bought a new Sony 40″ LCD TV I discovered the TV speakers were better than my old cheapie surround sound system. I then bought this Sony HTSS360. I’m a long way from an audio expert but I know good sound when I hear it and this system has it all the way from the high to the low pitched sounds. I can now hear even faint sounds/sound effects I never knew existed with my old sound system. Between the new TV and this surround sound system all my existing DVD’s are like watching all new movies. It may be a little on the subjective side but my movies appear to have better color and clarity than when the feed was direct from my DVD player. Very easy to set up and play using one remote with the Bravia Sync. In my case just two HDMI cables, sat box and DVD player, to the receiver and one HDMI out to the TV, easy.

Incredible, Incredible, Incredible !!5
I replaced two pair of Infinity Reference “shallow mount” 6.5″ speakers with two pair of these components. Wow, wow, wow!! Simply powered by an Alpine head unit they transformed my car into a sound studio. Everyone writes about “hearing things in your music that you’d never heard before”, but Man! Some live tracks (like Dave Matthews or John Meyer) you can hear people in the audience coughing, or talking lightly. You can hear all the details as their fingers slide down a guitar string. Depths to the bass that I’ve never noticed. I’ve tried listening to entire songs and only paying attention to one instrument or background vocalist. They’re incredible.

I ordered these at the same time as an Infinity 4x 75 watt amp, and almost didn’t install it because it already sounded so good. After switching from head unit power, to a high-power amp, I noticed tighter bass, deeper reach, more punch, and higher volume levels before distortion (in fact, with the amp I can turn it up louder than I could possible stand without any break-up. With the head unit you could start to hear the bass clipping at higher levels.)

It’s amazing the clarity and separation of each instrument. Infinity have really made a great product with the 6020. Go buy it and enjoy!

Excellent Sound Stage — Crisp and Clean5
Infinity has hit the mark with this component set. I installed them about a month ago, and I couldn’t be happier. On first install, I wired the tweeters to the -3dB crossover connection to put a slight damper on the treble. After listening for a week, I changed the tweeters back to 0dB change for a more balanced sound. If you have a subwoofer, and you like bass, you will need all the tweeter you can get. If you do not have a subwoofer and amp, you may prefer a little less treble (use the -3dB). In either case, be sure to leave the crossover accessible for the first week or two, until you decide.

Quality Speakers5
Once again Infinity has produced a quality speaker. I have owned many Infinity products and have yet to be dissapointed. Excellent sound characteristics, and range, 2ohm load helps if connected to factory head unit. There is a wide price range out these so shop around.

Season 2 of CYE is arriving in June! Here’s hoping HBO keeps the sets coming more frequently than they’ve done with Oz. Season 2 ranks up there and has some priceless moments including the doll episode! I would like to discover more bonus features on the CYE discs…maybe outtakes or the ultimate opinion…the cast roasting Larry!

List of Season 2 episodes (air date) :

The Car Salesman (9/23/01)

Thor (9/30/01)

I rated this four stars relative to the series as a whole; in relation to every other comedy currently on the air, it really warrants the corpulent five stars. In short, I have to agree with other reviewers who feel Season Two is probably the weakest in the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” series. Serene, this is worth the sign of admission for the “Doll Head” episode alone, maybe the funniest 30 minutes ever aired in television history, even if the rest isn’t quite up to the usual Larry David standards. And while I’m not generally a fan of DVD extras, shelling out 35 bucks for a no-frills five-hour’s worth of viewing seemed a tad inflated compared to similar DVD sets on the market (really, all the HBO series DVD’s are over-priced) .

It was unexcited worth it in the waste, as nothing makes me laugh harder than watching this dreadful shlub convey his arrangement through ridiculous situations of his maintain making. Priceless moments this season include an uncomfortably realistic bit with Jason Alexander suffering the slings and arrows of post-Seinfeld Costanza-typecasting; Ed Asner’s hysterical turn as a gruff and horny broken-down geezer on his last legs; and a shocked Larry encountering his shrink sporting a package-revealing thong at the beach — not to even mention the nightmarish water bottle incident in the “Doll Head” episode.

This is “Curb Your Enthusiasm” undergoing growing exertion, unsuccessful in fully re-capturing the spontaneous greatness of Season One and not yet on the reliably precise legs that will later hallmark its prime. While the writing and guest spots improve markedly in subsequent years, this series is unruffled friendly to everything being served up by the networks, even in its weakest hour.
